Responding to an enquiry for supply and installation of a large commercial aircraft hangar for use in an ‘airside’ application at Bristol Airport.
In late 2015, Bristol & Wessex Aeroplane Club Ltd, based ‘airside’ at Bristol Airport got in touch to discuss their options for increasing hangar space for their growing business needs.
With McGregor Hangars operating as ‘Principle Designer’ throughout the design and build process. We proposed our Forum hangar – at 15 meters wide, with an access of 11.5 x 5.7 this PVC clad, steel framed hangar was the perfect fit for this ‘airside’ application. Formed of a triple trellis structure providing a light, open and spacious environment, the Forum hangar would deliver the perfect space for our clients maintenance and storage needs. Working closely with Bristol & Wessex Aeroplane Club to create a structure that performed to their specific needs, a Hangar length of 20 meters was detailed with plated anchors (fixing direct to the tarmac strip with Spirafix anchors), grey PVC cladding with integrated 3 meter wide roof window, along with a heavy-duty PVC sliding curtain door.
“The addition of this new hangar will allow us to provide light aircraft maintenance to our fleet of aircraft, as well as support their future vision of providing a turn-key maintenance facility for general aviation.”
Following the formal submission of the structural design, created by the engineering team at the McGregor Hangars. We worked closely with planning, airport safety, airport logistics and our client to ensure the project successfully negotiated the planning process.
The structure and PVC sheet cladding were manufactured from our two factories in the south of England and delivered to site. Installation followed a detailed project plan in-line with stringent construction requirements demanded airside at this large commercial airport. Installed within a 4 week period. Health and safety conditions we met comfortably.
The addition of this new hangar will allow Bristol & Wessex Aeroplane Club to provide light aircraft maintenance to their fleet of aircraft, as well as support their future vision of providing a turn-key maintenance facility for general aviation.
As well as light aircraft maintenance, the addition of this 15 meter hangar creates the opportunity to provide overnight hangar space for visiting or resident aircraft where required. The new hangar has been built within close distance of the flying club located alongside one of the Southside taxiways at Bristol Airport.
